You may feel amazed that both medieval Christians and Chinese people believed in a single supreme God. Maybe even astonished that both of them worshiped the son of God. It’s thus no wonder they both named unpredictable disasters as the punishment of God—they made mistakes, so God raised his whip.
But when the whip really fell, they behaved very differently. This is the major topic of this column, in particular about the Mongol invasions in the 13th century and how very dissimilar societies reacted. Surprisingly, their essential behavior models remain unchanged to this day.
